Content targeting

Content targeting restricts subscribers' access to content and enables you to:

  • Vary content by region.

  • Make content only available to customers who have taken out subscriptions from a registered address in a specified locale.

  • Conform with licensing terms on specific content.

Content targeting has to be applied at the platform level and can also be applied to:

  • Live channels

  • Live events

  • VOD contents

Content targeting can apply restrictions based on:

  • Network characteristics:

    • Whether the subscriber is connected via VPN

    • Whether the subscriber’s IP address is within defined ranges

    • Whether the subscriber is connected via their home location’s Wi-Fi network

  • Geo-targeting:

    • Geo-blocking:

      • At the content level, subscribers cannot play channels, events, or content in a location outside the allowed locations (although they may be able to see the listing).
This depends on the location settings on the channel/event/content.

      • At the platform level, subscribers will not be able to log in if their location is outside the allowed locations.

    • Geo-filtering – subscribers cannot access channels, events and content if their location is outside the allowed locations.
This depends on the location settings on the channel/event/content.

At the platform level, if geo-blocking or geo-filtering are enabled, the subscriber’s location (which can be their billing address or determined by IP geolocation) is compared to the allowed countries that you have defined to determine whether geo-blocking and geo-filtering are applied.

At the content level, if geo-blocking or geo-filtering are enabled for a channel, event, or content item, the subscriber’s location (which can be their billing address or determined by IP geolocation) is compared to the allowed locations (which can be countries, cities, Designated Market Areas (DMAs) or custom details) to determine whether geo-blocking or geo-filtering are applied to the channel/event/content item. The allowed locations are defined in Content targeting groups that you then select for a channel/event/content item.

Non-location based content targeting groups can also be configured, see Content targeting groups – Custom details.

Geo-filtering and geo-blocking at platform level can be overridden for individual subscribers.

The various possible geo-blocking and geo-filtering scenarios are explained below.
